Setting up Stripe for a US LLC owned from abroad

A step by step guide to getting Stripe working for a foreign-owned US LLC, covering the EIN, bank account, address, and website checks.

Setting up Stripe for a US LLC owned from abroad is easier once you understand the order Stripe checks things in. This guide walks through what you need before you apply, what Stripe verifies, and what happens if Stripe asks for more information later.

What you need before you apply

Stripe wants to see four things from a new business account: an EIN, a US bank account, a US business address, and a working website. You do not need to be a US resident or have a US-issued ID to open a Stripe account for your LLC, but you do need all four pieces lined up first. Applying before you have them usually leads to a rejection or a long review, so it is worth getting the LLC itself formed and fully set up before you touch the Stripe signup form.

Why the EIN comes first

Your EIN is how the IRS and Stripe both identify your business. Stripe checks the EIN against IRS records during onboarding, and a mismatch between your LLC's legal name and the name on file with the IRS is one of the most common reasons an application gets flagged. If you formed your LLC with a non-resident owner and no SSN, expect the EIN itself to take a few weeks unless you request expedited processing. You cannot meaningfully start the Stripe application until the EIN is confirmed.

Why you need a US bank account

Stripe pays out to a US bank account for a US-registered entity. This does not have to be a traditional bank. Once your EIN is issued, most non-resident founders get introduced to a US business bank account provider such as Mercury, Wise Business, or Relay. Each of these makes its own approval decision, and Stripe does not care which one you choose as long as the account is in your LLC's name and holds a US routing number.

The US address requirement

Stripe asks for a US business address during signup, separate from your registered agent address in most cases. A registered agent's job is to receive legal mail, not to serve as your operating address, so using it interchangeably with Stripe can cause confusion during review. A dedicated US mailing and business address keeps this clean and gives you one consistent address across your EIN application, bank account, and Stripe profile.

Website and business description

Stripe reviews your website as part of onboarding, and this step trips up more founders than the paperwork does. Your site needs to be live, describe what you actually sell, show pricing where relevant, and include a way to contact you. A landing page with no content, a broken link, or a mismatch between what your site says and what you enter in the Stripe dashboard will slow things down or trigger a manual review.

What Stripe verifies during onboarding

Check What Stripe looks at
Identity Name and details of the beneficial owner or authorized representative
Business EIN, legal business name, entity type, and address
Bank Account ownership, routing and account number, name match
Website Live content, product or service description, contact details

Stripe runs these checks automatically in most cases. If everything matches, the account activates fairly quickly. If something does not line up, a human reviewer steps in and asks for supporting documents.

Payouts and how they start

New Stripe accounts usually start on a more conservative payout schedule while Stripe builds a history with your business. This can loosen up as your account processes clean transactions over time, but the exact schedule and any holds depend on your industry, your volume, and Stripe's own risk assessment at the time. Check your Stripe dashboard directly for your account's current payout schedule, since it is set per account and can change.

When Stripe asks for more information

Stripe can request more documentation at any point, not just at signup. Common triggers include a sudden jump in transaction volume, a spike in chargebacks or refunds, a business category Stripe treats as higher risk, or details that changed after your account was approved, like a new address or a different beneficial owner. When this happens, Stripe typically asks for proof of business activity, additional identity documents, or clarification on the products or services you sell. Responding quickly and with consistent information across your LLC filings, EIN, and website is the fastest way through this.

Do you need Stripe Atlas or a similar formation bundle

No. Stripe Atlas and similar bundled formation products are one way to get an LLC and a Stripe account together, but they are not required. Any properly formed US LLC with its own EIN, a US bank account, and a real US address can apply to Stripe directly. PowerLaunch forms the LLC or C-Corporation, gets you the EIN, and sets up your US address, and you connect all of it to Stripe yourself once those pieces are ready.

Tax filings once Stripe is live

If you run a foreign-owned single-member LLC, processing payments through Stripe does not change your federal filing duty. You still need to file Form 5472 along with a pro forma 1120 by April 15 each year, even in a year with no profit. Beneficial ownership information reporting is not currently required for US-formed companies under the 2026 interim FinCEN rule, but rules like this can shift, so check the official FinCEN guidance if you are unsure of your current status.

How PowerLaunch fits into this

The Launch plan gets you the EIN, the operating agreement, and the US mailing and business address you need before applying to Stripe. The Run plan adds bank account connections, Stripe invoicing tools, and automatic transaction categorization once your account is live, plus the annual filings that keep your LLC in good standing. The Scale plan adds a dedicated bookkeeper and expedited EIN processing if you are trying to move fast.
