You do not have to use your home address on a US LLC filing, and in most cases you should not. A US LLC actually needs several different addresses, each with its own rules, and mixing them up can create privacy problems or bank delays down the line.

The four addresses your LLC touches

An LLC formed for a founder living abroad usually needs four separate addresses. They serve different legal and practical purposes, and states do not always require the same address for each one.

  • Registered agent address: this must be a physical street address inside the state of formation. It is where the state and any legal process server can reach your company. A PO box does not qualify.
  • Principal office address: this is the address you list as your company's main place of business on the formation documents. Whether this can be outside the US depends on the state, so check that state's filing rules before you submit.
  • Mailing address: this is where you actually want your mail delivered. It can be different from both the registered agent address and the principal office address in most states.
  • Bank and Stripe address: banks and payment processors ask for a business address as part of their own onboarding checks. They generally prefer a US address, and some treat a home address abroad as a red flag rather than a reassurance.

Why your registered agent can't be your home address

Every US LLC needs a registered agent in its state of formation, full stop. This is a legal requirement, not a formality. The registered agent's address becomes part of the public record, and it has to be a real street address in that state where someone can accept documents during business hours. If you live outside the US, you cannot act as your own registered agent, and using a friend's home address is risky if that person moves or is unavailable.

Why a home address on public filings is risky

Many states publish the principal office address, member names, and sometimes the mailing address in a public, searchable database. If you use your actual home address abroad, that address becomes visible to anyone who looks up your LLC. This creates a few practical problems.

  • Privacy exposure: your home address is now tied to a public business record indefinitely, and removing it later usually means an amendment filing with the state, which costs money and time.
  • Mismatched banking signals: banks and Stripe often flag a foreign residential address differently than a US business address, which can slow down account approval or trigger extra verification.
  • Inconsistent records: if your registered agent address, your principal office address, and your bank address all point to different countries or types of buildings, that inconsistency can raise questions during compliance reviews.

What PowerLaunch provides instead

The Launch plan, and every plan built on top of it, includes a registered agent address in the state of formation plus a virtual mailing and business address. This means you get a real, compliant registered agent address for your public filings, and a separate US mailing and business address you can use for banking, Stripe, and general correspondence, without exposing your home address abroad. Mail sent to your virtual address is available through your MyCG.AI account.

Comparison at a glance

Address type Must it be in the state? Can it be your home address abroad? Who uses it
Registered agent Yes, always No State, legal notices
Principal office Depends on the state Sometimes, check the state's site State filings, public record
Mailing address No Yes, but not recommended You, banks, vendors
Bank and Stripe address Usually prefers US Not recommended Bank and payment onboarding

What banks and Stripe actually look for

Once your LLC has an EIN, PowerLaunch can introduce you to Mercury, Wise Business, or Relay for bank account applications. Final approval is always the bank's decision, not PowerLaunch's, but a consistent US business address on file tends to make the process smoother. Stripe follows a similar pattern, it wants a business address that matches your formation documents and does not contain obvious mismatches with your registered agent or mailing address. A virtual US business address, used consistently across your filings, banking, and payment setup, removes one common source of friction.

Federal filings still apply regardless of address

Your choice of address does not change your federal filing obligations. If you are a foreign owner of a single-member LLC, you still need to file Form 5472 along with a pro forma 1120 by 15 April each year. Separately, under the 2026 interim FinCEN rule, US-formed companies are currently exempt from BOI reporting, but this is a rule that can change, so it is worth checking current guidance before you assume it still applies at filing time.

A quick word on state variation

Because principal office address rules vary by state, and some states are stricter than others about what has to be a physical in-state address versus what can be anywhere, do not assume your home state's rules apply everywhere. If you are unsure whether your chosen state allows a foreign principal office address, check that state's Secretary of State website directly before filing, or ask during your consultation.
